Mission
The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra will enrich the cultural lives of the residents of the Central Wisconsin area by presenting high quality concerts, fostering an appreciation of symphonic music, providing a performance venue for area musicians, and developing an educational opportunity for youth.

Celebrating Music and Film: A Concert For Area Fourth Graders
The Dorothy Vetter Memorial Education Concert is a biennial event bringing over 1400 area fourth grade students and their chaperones to the Theater @ 1800 in the Sentry Complex to attend one of two concerts.

The schools receive an education packet in the months preceding the concerts, preparing the students for the day by teaching about the structure of the orchestra, the various roles of the instruments, how the instruments are played, concert etiquette and how the music is enjoyed. The supplemental age-appropriate materials are used at the teachers' discretion, and further materials are available upon request.

Dorothy Vetter lived her entire life in Stevens Point where she was a music teacher and supervisor specializing in vocal music for more than thirty years. She attended city schools and graduated from Stevens Point Normal School in 1923. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northwestern University and Columbia University, respectively.

Miss Vetter began her teaching career in 1935. She worked with choral clubs, church choirs, and community and school productions as a conductor, accompanist and director. It is said that whenever and wherever there was music in Stevens Point, Dorothy Vetter was actively involved. Her other joys in life were attending family events, gardening, animals and travel.

Miss Vetter provided scholarships for University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point music students. She also left funds to establish an endowment fund with the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, making this concert possible. The fourth grade concert fulfills one of Dorothy Vetter's dreams for an on-going gift to the students of Portage County.

Our goal, in conjunction with Dorothy Vetter's vision is to make this program accessible to all children in the community, regardless of their socio-economic situation or parental involvement. We believe that experiences like our Dorothy Vetter Memorial Education concerts will complement and enhance the arts education provided to students in our community.

CWSO/UWSP Department of Music String Quartet Scholarship
The CWSO and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has partnered to provide four $1000.00 annual scholarships supporting string students studying at UWSP who are also active participants in the CWSO. This scholarship fund is part of our mission to provide educational opportunities for youth.

CWSO Biennial Young Artist Competition
The CWSO holds a biennial competition for area ninth through twelfth grade students. The competition is held in the fall with the winner making a solo appearance with the CWSO during the season. The mission of the competition is to provide a high-quality performance experience for the finest young performers from central Wisconsin, and to assist them in pursuing advanced study.

Other Outreach Efforts
Maestro Patrick Miles is available for your next meeting with a presentation on the history of the symphony orchestra, discussion about the music and the role of the CWSO in our community. Your membership will be able to ask questions and learn in an interactive and informative environment. He is available by appointment through the CWSO office: 715-345-CWSO (2976).

As our mission states, fostering an appreciation for symphonic music and developing an educational opportunity for youth is at the core of what we do. We provide other educational and outreach opportunities by arranging master classes with the guest artists, school visits by orchestra members and guest artists and participation in the LIFE (Learning Is ForEver) program at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
