The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra announces the fourth annual “So You Think You Can Conduct” contest. Three high-profile community members are in fierce competition, vying for the winning number of votes. The winner will have the honor of conducting the orchestra. The champion and the surprise orchestral work will be revealed at the February 17 and 18 concerts.
This year’s lineup features the following local celebrities: David M. Bakken, Patty Dreier, and the Rev. Dr. Clay Schmit. David Bakken, a founding partner in Great Northern Distilling in Plover states, “As a distiller, I enjoy a good spirit. With ‘A Vintage season’ being the theme for this concert season at CWSO, I feel I can stir the ‘Spirit’ created through classical ...” Patty Dreier was elected Portage County Executive in April of 2010.  She represents the 71,000 citizens who reside there and says of her campaign, “As someone completing my final year in the Portage County Executive Office. I’m excited about the opportunity for another way to conductor of the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra! Let’s call it an opportunity for a ‘swan song’ to my Executive public service.” Pastor Schmit is new to Stevens Point and is in love with the community and its resources, including CWSO.  He is pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, happily returning to congregational ministry after many years as a scholar. Faithful in his success as a conductor, Schmit states, “Serving faithfully in the Lord’s vineyard has kept me from experiencing my life-long dream of conducting a Symphony Orchestra.”
Whoever wins, the audience at the “En Français” February concerts will delight in a heartfelt contest and shared love of music.
Voting is open now until January 20. Each vote is $5 and can be made directly to the contestant, by sending a check (indicate your candidate in the memo section) to the CWSO, or via the CWSO web site
