Fanfare Composition Competion

The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra announces a fanfare composition contest for young Wisconsin composers to help celebrate its 60th season (2008-09).  Composers who were born on or after September 1, 1978 are encouraged to apply.  Applicants must have been born in Wisconsin, have a current Wisconsin residency or be current students in Wisconsin in order to be eligible.  Residency and age verification are required. 

  • Receipt deadline is January 15, 2008.
  • Instrumentation limit is *2222-4331-tmp+3-strings.  Smaller orchestrations will be considered.  See Daniel’s Orchestral Music if you are unfamiliar with the instrumentation code.
  • The work cannot exceed 2’ duration.
  • The work must have never been previously performed.
  • One different fanfare will be selected for each of the four concerts during the CWSO season.  All entries may be considered for performance, however, if not enough submissions are deemed worthy, there may be no winners.
  • A prize of $500 will be awarded to each of the four winners.  It is expected that the winning composers will be in attendance at the concerts when their work is performed.  Lodging may be provided by CWSO if needed.

 

The winner will be announced in March, 2008.  To apply please send the following:

Four bound complete scores of the work.  Three of the scores must have the title only.  One score must have the title and composer’s name.  Pieces that are not notated at a professional standard will not be reviewed.  Included with the application must be a sheet with the composer’s name, title of the work, instrumentation, duration, composer’s address, phone number, email address and proof of Wisconsin residency or birth (photocopies are acceptable).  MIDI realizations on three separate CDs must be included.  Include a SASE for return of materials if desired.  To submit or for more information, please contact:

McKenna announced as Symphony president

Former Dean of the UWSP College of Fine Arts and Communication Gerard McKenna was elected as Board President of the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra during its July 16th Annual Meeting at Christian’s Bistro, Stevens Point.  The CWSO board of directors, staff, music director, guild, and orchestra were thanked for their dedication and hard work.  This past concert season celebrated diverse music programs and ended with over 200 musicians on stage in April for Verdi’s Requiem.  Educational outreach activity impacted more than 1500 area students.

Outgoing board members Steven Bergin (President); Jeanne Regnier (Treasurer); Gary Dreier, Bob Taylor and Peg Garber were recognized for their many contributions to the organization.  The new slate of board members elected were Gerard McKenna and Joy Palmer of Stevens Point.  Current board members re-elected for a second term were Ann Doebler, Margie LaBarge, Palmi Möller, Kitty Munck and Mary Taylor.  Officers elected to the board were Gerard McKenna, President; Ann Doebler, Vice-President; Liz Kammer, Secretary; and Joy Palmer, Treasurer.  Board members continuing their terms are Brad Anderson, Chuck Bigelow, Dan Dougherty, Ann Huntoon, Timothy Laatsch, Brian Martz, Sharon Morell, Jeff Morin, Anita Polzin, Anne Schierl, Tom Stenborg, and Tom Stout.
